This index is based on 502 companies with capitalization ranging from $1 billion to $600 billion, according to S&P. This index captures 75 percent of U.S. equities.
The S&P 500 increased 11.4 percent in 2014 after surging 29.6 percent in 2013. The S&P 500 outpaced the Dow for both years. The 10-year average for the S&P 500 for 2014 posted at 7.2 percent up from 7.0 percent in 2013.

The S&P 500 increased 9.0 percent from a year ago after rising 5.2 percent in June.

The index added 2.0 percent in July after retreating 2.1 percent in June. The S&P 500 increased in four of the seven months so far in 2015.
